5 Ways To Pray On Target

The story is told of a young man who went into the service during WWII and was stationed on an aircraft carrier.  His ship was under attack.  The enemy was hard-hitting, but they were holding their own…until their main gunners were taken out, and it was discovered an enemy submarine was right up on them.

The young man knew how to pray, but was never comfortable with it and would stumble around blessing everyone and vaguely praying for what needed praying for…until today.  Today was different.  The attack was right in their face and was going to blow them out of the water.

With his heart pounding, he dropped to his knees and blurted out, “God cause confusion inside the submarine, jam their instruments, and save our ship from destruction!”  Before he could stand to his feet, the submarine exploded!

No one could explain how it happened!  The young man knew God had heard his prayer and intervened. He had prayed an “on-target” prayer, and God did what he asked.

At times I find myself going through the motions and need more on-target praying in my life.

Have you ever struggled with half-hearted praying?  Here are some ways to help us stay on target and move forward in our prayer life.

  1. Pray with a Clean Heart– Make sure your life is free from sin, so God can work through you. James 5:6 “The effectual and fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
  2. Pray with Great Faith– Praying with faith empowers your prayers. The Bible tells us in Mark 12:22, “Have faith in God.”  Without faith, you may as well be rubbing a “lucky rabbit’s foot.”  God tells us even tiny mustard-seed faith is powerful. Faith is the most potent force we could have in our lives, because it is believing God will do what we ask in accordance to his will.

Mustard Seed Faith

“If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto the mountains, remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove.  Nothing is impossible with God.”  Matthew 17:20

  1. Pray with Confidence– When your load is heavy, put your confidence in a God who loves you and knows all the details.  Pray to God just like you talk…and all of us know how to do some talking!  Run to Him with everything in your lives.  Pour your heart out to him.  God’s Word tells us, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us.” 1 John 5:14
  2. Be Specific– Tell God exactly what you need. Name the details.  Yes, he already knows, but he wants you to call on him for his help.  He is not going to push himself into your life.
  3. Claim It– Don’t wish for this to happen, hope for it to happen, or treat it like you are playing a scratch-off card. Close your prayer in the most powerful name in heaven and on earth. A name above all others, a name that the devil and all his demons tremble at…the name of JESUS.

I challenge myself and anyone reading this to make praying on target high priority in our lives as we determine to daily grow on our journey with God. For more on prayer read here.

  1. Love the story and the great suggestions for praying more specific, on-target prayers!

  2. Thanks Cathy for this great reminder on prayer! What a privilige that we can ask God for such specific things!

  3. Powerful reminders. Thank you. The name of Jesus is indeed so powerful and yet when I pray in His name it is often a rote habit. My prayers tonight will be different because of this post.

  4. Thank you Cathy for this reminder! I sometimes go into “auto-pray” mode. Your timing was perfect for me on this!

  5. I love your post and the story about the submarine. Sorry guys (on the sub) but you were the enemy and God was protecting our boys.
Thanks for sharing with us here at “Tell me a Story.”

  6. Good thinking, good sharing. Focusing on our world and the forever-in-heaven is all we can do, moment-by-moment.
