Check Your Heart!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Day 2 How to Check Your Heart I’ll never forget the day the nurse hooked my husband up to an EKG and instead of the peaks pointing upward with each heartbeat…they were laying on their side making a long black mark on the readout. The nurse ran out of the room and the Dr. entered, sliding him into a wheelchair and literally running him next door to ICU, where we spent Labor Day weekend having emergency heart surgery.  He was given only a 20% chance of living, because his heart was so blocked they were fearful it would explode before they could operate.  He was only 39 years old and had a rare genetic disorder. He never felt sick, yet he was so close to death.  His brother was told to get checked…Thirty days later he had the same diagnosis and the same surgery.

How could this happen?

For eighteen years my husband had never even had a headache.  Because of thinking he was healthy, he NEVER went to the doctor for a check-up and it almost cost him his life.

We learned a hard life lesson from this experience!

We Need A Spiritual Heart Check.

How many times do we fill our lives with everything under the sun, and leave little or no time for our relationship with God?  We think we are doing fine, but in reality we are empty, running on small faith, anorexic with God’s Word, and unguarded to the things of this world.  It can happen so easily.

We can be spiritually sick and possibly not even know it.

Before we can really grow with God, it’s time for a checkup.  Stepping back and evaluating your spiritual walk is so important.  How can we determine where we are going, if we don’t know where we are right now?

Luke 10:27 is our power verse for the next 31 days.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

Check Your Heart:

  1. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart…” How deep is your love for God?   Ask God to fill you everyday with his love and then…give it away to everyone you touch.
  2. Are you hiding God’s Word in your heart? If America was invaded tomorrow and they took our Bibles, how much scripture would you know?  Start Memorizing Luke 10:27.
  3. Check for heart blockages. Is there anything in your heart that needs to be surrendered to God?  If so, make it right so nothing is standing in the way of moving forward.

I am excited for every second of what God has ahead for each of us.  “Oh God, search our hearts and draw us closer to you than ever before.”

I look forward to connecting tomorrow, my friend.

  1. I am so thankful your husband was given more time on this earth. You are so right in that we need to make sure to have our spiritual check ups. Blessings!

  2. What a terrifying experience! But, love your reminder that we do need periodic spiritual health checks and to keep challenging ourselves to grow in our faith.

  3. Great point, Cathy. We need a heart check. We need to be connected to His EKG. If all the points look down then we’re in big trouble indeed. But one more thing. My mom died because she refused to see a doctor. Not because she didn’t know she was sick, but because she didn’t want to hear the news. If she didn’t know it wasn’t there. She played hide and seek with her life and we are the poorer for it. Blessing to you for your words of truth ~ chris

    • You are right about being in big trouble if we neglect a heart check. I am so sorry to hear about you Mom. I know you miss her! Thanks for stopping by Chris!
